The six smallest even natural numbers (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) are written on the faces of a custom die, one number per face. Sadie rolls the die four times. Which of the following cannot be the sum of her four results?

Notice that all of these numbers are even numbers.
When we add even numbers together, the sum is always even:
An even number plus an even number is always an even number.
Therefore, adding four even numbers together will always result in an even number.

C) 35 is an odd number.
D) 48 is an even number.
E) 36 is an even number.

A furniture store sells a large bookshelf and a small bookshelf made from identical modular pieces. All the end and middle panels are of equal width. How wide is one end panel?

The small bookshelf on the right has a total width of 70. It consists of 2 vertical panels (left and right) and 1 shelf column.
Step 2 — Solve:
Let's compare the two bookshelves using simple arithmetic:
1. If we place two small bookshelves side-by-side, their combined width would be:
70 + 70 = 140
2. These two small bookshelves together would contain a total of 4 vertical panels and 2 shelf columns.
3. The large bookshelf has a width of 130 and contains 3 vertical panels and 2 shelf columns.
4. The difference between the two combined small bookshelves and the one large bookshelf is exactly 1 vertical panel:
Two small bookshelves: 4 panels + 2 shelf columns = 140
One large bookshelf: 3 panels + 2 shelf columns = 130
Subtracting these gives the width of one panel:
140 - 130 = 10
